ACUTE TELOGEN EFFLUVIUM

ACUTE TELOGEN EFFLUVIUM.

Acute telogen effluvium (ATE) causes dramatic and excessive hair shedding. It is a common temporary form of hair loss that may begin suddenly after a ‘‘shock’’ to your system. It usually recovers over a 3-6 month period.

WHY HAIR SHEDDING?

Our hair grows (‘‘anagen fase’’) in cycles and at the end of each cycle the hair bulb dies. It will remain on our scalp ( ‘‘resting or telogen fase’’) for 3 months before a new hair is produced that pushes this old one out. This means that the hairs that fall out today actually died 3 months ago.

The growth fase of the hairs on our scalp is approximately 3 years. On average it is normal to shed 100 hairs per day to make room for new hair growth. A ‘‘shock’’ to your system can cause the hair bulb to die prematurely leading to increased hair shedding 3 months later.

CAUSES OF ACUTE TELOGEN EFFLUVIUM?

In 30% of people we are unable to find the trigger for ATE. Sometimes ATE can be an early warning sign for Female or Male Pattern Hair Loss. A consultation with Dr Clarysse can help determine the cause of your hair loss.
