ACUTE TELOGEN EFFLUVIUM
FEMALE PATTERN HAIR LOSS.
Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) causes diffuse gradual thinning over top and front parts of the scalp. It is the most common type of hair loss in women and affects approximately 40-60% of women who are genetically predisposed to it.
WHAT IS FEMALE PATTERN?
FPHL presents quite differently from the typical male pattern baldness. Women will often first notice periods of increased shedding before being aware of volume loss. As the condition progresses, the scalp will start shining through the hairs and become more visible. Women with longer hair may also notice reduced pony tail thickness. Unlike in male, even in advanced FPHL, the frontal hairline is always retained and the affected area will never become completely bald.
CAUSES OF FEMALE PATTERN HAIR LOSS?
FPHL typically presents when women with an inherited predisposition to FPHL are exposed to androgens (male hormones). These androgens cause miniaturisation of susceptible hair follicles which gradually shrink until they can no longer support production of new hair. This results in smaller, shorter and finer hair mostly on top of the scalp. A consultation with Dr Clarysse can help determine the cause of your hair loss.
